CARDAMOM IMPORT IS
ON THE DECLINE

Import of cardamom to India has been declining consistently from April to August 2010. Only a meager quantity of 45 tonnes of cardamom has been imported from Guatemala. In 2009-10 the import was 95 tonnes and in 2008-09 it was 180 tonnes. The decline is from 875 tonnes in 2007-08. The reason for this significant fall In imports is due to the consistent decline in production in Guatemala and the strict vigil at major customs points through which cardamom is imported to India
The production of cardamom in Guatemala during 2007 was 28,000 tonnes, which has come down to 16,500 tonnes in 2009. However, a marginal increase of production is reported in 2010. The production in 2010 is estimated to be around 20,000 tonnes. In 2007 Guatemala exported 27,961 tonnes of cardamom. In 2008 the export was 21,952 tonnes and in 2009 it was 23,693 tonnes. In 2010 up to August, 12,261 tonnes has been exported. As compared to January-August 2009, the export during 2010 is less by around 4000 tonnes. It is reported that the decline in export is an indication of negligible carryover stock from previous years.
India's cardamom export has reached an all time record in terms of value during 2009-10 by achieving Rs 165.70 crores from an export quantity of 1975 tonnes. The previous highest quantity exported during the last two decades was 1545 tonnes in 2000-0l. However, the value realized was only Rs 84.68 crores. In 2009-10 we have exported 1120 tonnes or 57 percent of our total exports to Saudi Arabia. In the current year i.e. 2010-11 up to August 2010 we have exported 205 tonnes valued at Rs 25.36 crores.
India's production in 2010-11 is estimated to be almost at the same level of last year i.e. 10,350 tonnes (10,000 tonnes in 2009-10). It is reported that the production in Guatemala in 2010 would be about 20,000 tonnes which will be no way near their peak production of 30,000 tonnes in 2004/2005. It is also reported that the inventory in Guatemala as well as in the major consuming countries like Saudi Arabia is very low.
